Survivors Pension
A federal financial benefit providing monthly payments to qualifying surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of deceased wartime Veterans, subject to income and net worth thresholds established by Congress.
This program delivers ongoing monthly financial support to eligible family members of Veterans who served during recognized wartime periods. Surviving spouses who have not remarried may qualify if the deceased Veteran served on active duty with service requirements varying based on their entry date (90 days minimum for those entering before September 1980, or 24 months for those entering after). Unmarried dependent children can receive benefits if they are under 18, between 18-23 and enrolled in an approved school, or permanently unable to support themselves due to disability occurring before age 18. The program recognizes specific wartime periods including the Mexican Border period, both World Wars, the Korean conflict, Vietnam War era, and the Gulf War. Payment amounts may increase for surviving spouses with dependent children. Applicants must meet annual income and net worth limits, with net worth calculated as total assets minus debts, excluding primary residence, vehicle, and basic furnishings. The application process offers multiple pathways including online submission, mail-in forms, in-person visits to regional offices, or assistance from accredited representatives. Applicants can file an intent to file form to potentially receive retroactive payments while gathering supporting documentation.
