Survivors Pension and DIC

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers financial assistance to surviving family members of veterans through two main programs: Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), a tax-free monthly benefit available to surviving spouses, children, and parents; and Survivors Pension, available to surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of veterans with wartime service. Additional support includes aid for those needing help with daily activities or who are housebound, bereavement counseling, and various related benefits.

As a surviving family member of a veteran, you may qualify for monthly monetary benefits from the VA. DIC provides tax-free compensation to spouses, children, and parents of deceased veterans based on the veteran's service-connected death or disability. The Survivors Pension program serves surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of veterans who served during wartime periods and have limited income. If you require assistance with daily living activities or are housebound, you may be eligible for additional Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits that increase your monthly payment. The VA also provides bereavement counseling through its Vet Centers for immediate family members. Other related benefits for survivors include educational assistance programs, home loan eligibility for surviving spouses, CHAMPVA health insurance coverage, and burial allowances to help cover funeral expenses. Fiduciary services are available for those who need help managing their benefits.
