VA Life Insurance
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides multiple life insurance options designed to help veterans, active service members, and their families achieve financial security. These programs offer coverage during service, after separation, and throughout retirement, with various plans tailored to different circumstances and needs.
VA administers several life insurance programs to serve different populations and situations. Active duty service members can participate in Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI), which provides automatic coverage. As service members transition to civilian life, they have four limited-time options to convert or continue coverage. Veterans with service-connected disabilities may qualify for VALife coverage. The Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) program allows veterans to convert their military coverage after leaving service. Additional programs serve specific populations, including those from earlier wars and veterans with preexisting conditions. The VA helps beneficiaries understand their coverage, manage policies online, file claims for benefits, and access premium waivers or early benefit disbursement in qualifying situations. Beneficiaries of deceased veterans enrolled in these plans may receive free financial planning and will preparation services. The agency provides calculators, educational materials, and forms to help applicants understand coverage needs and manage their benefits. All benefits are paid by electronic funds transfer. Support is available through multiple phone lines and telecommunications relay services.
