Fry Scholarship
The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship provides educational benefits to surviving children and spouses of service members or Selected Reserve members who died on or after September 11, 2001, in the line of duty or from service-connected disabilities. Eligible beneficiaries can receive up to 36 months of educational support covering tuition, housing, books, and related expenses at VA-approved schools.
This federal education benefit supports the surviving family members of military personnel lost after 9/11. Eligible children must be at least 18 years old or have a high school diploma/GED, and may use benefits with no age limit if their parent died on or after January 1, 2013, or under specific conditions if earlier. Surviving spouses retain eligibility even if they remarry, and can continue receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation simultaneously while using the scholarship. The program provides financial assistance for tuition, fees, housing allowances, textbooks, supplies, tutoring, exam fees, and licensing test preparation at any VA-approved school. Beneficiaries can use the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool to locate participating institutions. Applications are submitted via an online portal or by mailing VA Form 22-5490 to the appropriate regional processing office. The school's certifying official must also submit enrollment information once the beneficiary is accepted. Combined usage with the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance program is limited to either 81 or 48 months of full-time training depending on the service member's death date.
