Death in the Family - TRICARE Coverage Changes

When a service member or family member dies, surviving family members may be eligible to continue or modify their TRICARE health insurance coverage. Spouses and children of active duty members, retirees, or National Guard/Reserve members have different coverage options depending on the sponsor's status at the time of death. Eligible individuals have 90 days to make changes to their TRICARE plan.

When a military sponsor dies while on active duty, their surviving family members retain TRICARE coverage, though the specific plans and costs vary based on the sponsor's service status and family member type. Spouses can maintain coverage indefinitely unless they remarry, though remarriage to another active duty or retired service member preserves eligibility. Children continue coverage under the standard age limits that apply to their military status category. If the sponsor was retired at the time of death, surviving family coverage generally remains unchanged. For National Guard or Reserve members, benefits depend on the sponsor's activation status when they died. When a non-sponsor family member passes away, dependents should contact their local Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System office to understand how plan options may shift. Young adults who lose their sponsor may purchase TRICARE Young Adult coverage beginning at age 21 (or 23 if enrolled full-time in college), provided they meet other eligibility criteria including being unmarried and lacking employer-sponsored insurance. Death notification to the Defense Manpower Data Center can occur through mail, fax, or in-person at a uniformed services ID card office; pharmacy contractor notification to Express Scripts is required separately. The 90-day window after a death allows survivors to adjust their health plan elections.
